Chi Cheng (1970–2013) was an American musician best known as the bassist for the rock band Deftones. He was born on July 15, 1970, in Davis, California, and played a significant role in the development of Deftones' distinctive sound.
Cheng joined Deftones in 1988, shortly after the band's formation. Over the years, he contributed to several albums, including "Adrenaline" (1995), "Around the Fur" (1997), "White Pony" (2000), and "Saturday Night Wrist" (2006). His bass playing was known for its unique style, blending elements of metal, alternative rock, and experimental music.
Tragically, Cheng was involved in a car accident in Santa Clara, California, on November 3, 2008, which left him in a coma. He struggled with his health for several years before passing away on April 13, 2013, at the age of 42.
Chi Cheng's legacy lives on through his contributions to Deftones' music, and he is remembered by fans and the music community for his talent and impact on the alternative metal genre.
Deftones is an American alternative metal band that originated in Sacramento, California. The band was formed in 1988 and consists of Chino Moreno (vocals, guitar), Stephen Carpenter (guitar), Sergio Vega (bass), Frank Delgado (keyboards, turntables), and Abe Cunningham (drums and percussion). They are known for their unique blend of alternative, metal, and experimental music, often incorporating elements of shoegaze, post-rock, and electronic music into their sound.
Deftones gained widespread recognition with the release of their debut album, "Adrenaline," in 1995. However, it was their follow-up album, "Around the Fur" (1997), that brought them mainstream success and established their signature sound. The band continued to evolve their sound with albums like "White Pony" (2000), which is considered a landmark album in the nu-metal and alternative metal genres.
Over the years, Deftones have released several critically acclaimed albums, including "Diamond Eyes" (2010), "Koi No Yokan" (2012), and "Gore" (2016). They are known for their dynamic and atmospheric music, featuring heavy guitar riffs, emotional vocals, and a willingness to experiment with different genres.
Deftones have maintained a dedicated fanbase and are often praised for their ability to evolve and explore new musical territories while staying true to their roots. They have toured extensively and are renowned for their intense and energetic live performances.
