The band's original lineup consisted of Dave Gahan (vocals), Martin Gore (keyboards, guitar, vocals), Andy Fletcher (keyboards), and Vince Clarke (keyboards). Over the years, there have been lineup changes, with Alan Wilder joining the band in 1982 and Vince Clarke leaving shortly after their debut album.

Depeche Mode gained popularity in the 1980s with a string of successful albums, including "Speak & Spell," "Some Great Reward," and "Violator." Their music is known for its synthesis of electronic sounds, catchy melodies, and thought-provoking lyrics.
