Fran Tarkenton is a former American football player, primarily known for his career as a quarterback in the National Football League (NFL). He was born on February 3, 1940, in Richmond, Virginia. Tarkenton played college football at the University of Georgia before being selected in the third round of the 1961 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings.

Tarkenton had a remarkable career in the NFL, playing for the Minnesota Vikings from 1961 to 1966 and then again from 1972 to 1978, with a brief stint with the New York Giants from 1967 to 1971. He was known for his agility, strong arm, and ability to extend plays with his legs.

Some of Tarkenton's achievements and records include being a nine-time Pro Bowl selection, an NFL MVP in 1975, and leading the Vikings to three Super Bowl appearances (Super Bowl IV, Super Bowl VIII, and Super Bowl IX). Despite not winning a Super Bowl, Tarkenton was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1986, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the sport.
