"Ghostbusters" is a popular American supernatural comedy film franchise that began with the release of the first film in 1984. The franchise was created by Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd, who also starred in the film alongside Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson. The movie was directed by Ivan Reitman.

The plot of the original "Ghostbusters" follows three parapsychologists—Dr. Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Dr. Raymond Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), and Dr. Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis)—who start a ghost-catching business in New York City. They are later joined by Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson). The Ghostbusters use proton packs and other equipment to capture ghosts and supernatural entities.

The success of the first film led to the creation of an animated TV series, comic books, video games, and various merchandise. A sequel, "Ghostbusters II," was released in 1989, continuing the adventures of the ghost-catching team. After many years, a reboot titled "Ghostbusters: Answer the Call" was released in 2016, featuring an all-female cast led by Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones.

There have been ongoing discussions about the development of additional Ghostbusters projects, including a sequel to the original films titled "Ghostbusters: Afterlife," which was released in 2021. "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" is directed by Jason Reitman, the son of Ivan Reitman, and it serves as a direct sequel to the original two films, introducing a new generation of Ghostbusters.

The Ghostbusters franchise has left a lasting impact on popular culture, and the iconic theme song, "Ghostbusters," performed by Ray Parker Jr., remains well-known.
