Pantera was a highly influential American heavy metal band that formed in 1981. The band consisted of the Abbott brothers, Dimebag Darrell (guitar) and Vinnie Paul (drums), along with Rex Brown (bass) and Phil Anselmo (vocals). Pantera initially started as a glam metal band in the early '80s but later shifted towards a heavier and more aggressive sound, eventually becoming one of the pioneers of groove metal.
Their breakthrough came with the release of the album "Cowboys from Hell" in 1990, which showcased a shift towards a heavier and more thrash-oriented style. Pantera continued to gain popularity with subsequent albums such as "Vulgar Display of Power" (1992) and "Far Beyond Driven" (1994), solidifying their reputation as one of the leading bands in the metal scene.
Tragically, Dimebag Darrell was shot and killed on stage during a performance with his post-Pantera band, Damageplan, in 2004. The death of Dimebag Darrell marked the end of Pantera, as the Abbott brothers were a crucial part of the band's identity. Despite their relatively short time together, Pantera's impact on the metal genre remains significant, and they are remembered for their powerful and aggressive sound.
