Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999) — the one that kicked off the prequel trilogy and brought Star Wars back to the big screen after 16 years. It’s got its haters and die-hard defenders, but no doubt it’s a massive piece of the saga.

⭐ Plot in a Nutshell

The Galactic Republic is under threat from the greedy Trade Federation. Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi are sent to negotiate, but things go sideways. They rescue Queen Padmé Amidala and land on Tatooine, where they meet a young slave boy named Anakin Skywalker—who’s insanely Force-sensitive.

Meanwhile, behind the scenes, Darth Sidious is manipulating everything.

• Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) – Calm, wise Jedi with a rebellious streak.

• Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) – Younger, by-the-book Jedi apprentice.

• Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd) – Future Darth Vader as a precocious kid.

• Padmé Amidala (Natalie Portman) – Queen of Naboo, and lowkey badass.

• Darth Maul (Ray Park) – Iconic double-bladed lightsaber-wielding Sith.

• Fans: Divisive. Loved by younger generations who grew up with it, but older fans were split—especially over Jar Jar and the midi-chlorians explanation for the Force.
