The Smiths were a British rock band formed in Manchester in 1982. The band consisted of vocalist Morrissey, guitarist Johnny Marr, bassist Andy Rourke, and drummer Mike Joyce. They gained significant popularity in the 1980s with their unique blend of indie pop, jangle pop, and alternative rock.

Some of their most well-known albums include "The Smiths" (1984), "Meat Is Murder" (1985), and "The Queen Is Dead" (1986). The Smiths are often praised for Morrissey's distinctive and emotive vocals, Marr's intricate guitar work, and their intelligent and poetic lyrics.

Despite their critical acclaim and a dedicated fanbase, internal conflicts within the band led to their breakup in 1987. After The Smiths disbanded, Morrissey and Marr pursued solo careers, both achieving success in their own right.

The Smiths left a lasting impact on the alternative music scene, and their influence can still be heard in the work of many contemporary bands.
