🤘 ZZ Top: The Basics

• Formed in Houston, Texas in 1969.

• Classic lineup:

  • Billy Gibbons – guitar, vocals

  • Dusty Hill – bass, vocals (RIP 2021 💔)

  • Frank Beard – drums (ironically, the one without a beard)

🎸 Signature Sound

• A mix of blues rock, boogie, and Southern rock with a heavy dose of swagger.

• Known for groovy riffs, humor, and that unmistakable fuzzy guitar tone.

• In the '80s, they added synths and drum machines for a slicker sound but still kept it gritty.

Early Grit (’70s):

• Tres Hombres (1973) – “La Grange,” “Jesus Just Left Chicago”

• Fandango! (1975) – Half-live, half-studio. “Tush” is a classic.

Synthy Swagger (’80s):

• Eliminator (1983) – Their big MTV-era success. “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” “Sharp Dressed Man,” “Legs”

• Afterburner (1985) – More spacey and polished. “Sleeping Bag,” “Rough Boy”

Later Years:

• Still rocked into the 2000s and 2010s. La Futura (2012) is a solid comeback.
